Chromie Cube

A reinterpretation of HanRGB's CryptoCube #13 in real light. I 3D printed the cube in white and used my own algorithm, a process I call “color mapping,” to project an animated chromatic gradient onto it. The artwork is a video of that projection running in a loop.

CryptoCube #13 by Han was 3D printed in white. In a darkened room I set it in front of a projector and ran my own software, a process I call “color mapping,” which projects animated colored polygons onto physical objects from a full-screen browser window. I aligned a looping chromatic gradient onto the cube, matching color to each face. The finished piece is a video of that projection. Animation documentation by pixelpete.

It mixes the digital and the analog. Instead of rendering color in code on a screen, I projected real light onto a real object and let the camera hold it. The Chromie Squiggle's color language meets Han's volumetric form in physical space, then returns to the chain as a looping video.

It is not a digital render. It is a 3D printed cube with light physically color-mapped onto it, face by face, and captured as a loop.

A 2022 collaboration alongside Friendship Bracelets and Heart + Craft, and a return to the projection experiments that predate Chromie Squiggle, now turned onto another artist's form.
